Wergs Golf Course
The Wergs Golf Course is barely 4 miles from the centre of Wolverhampton, and yet this tree lined, lush parkland course with gently undulating fairways is truly a tranquil oasis.
The Wergs built in 1990 and measuring just less than 7,000 yards long, is a real challenging test of golf. With only three par threes, and two of those over 220 yard each, this course requires a full array of shot making.
The Wergs has a number of very different and interesting holes. The 3rd at only 313 yards long has a gentle left hand dogleg with a stream running all along the right hand side of the fairway, with out of bounds along the left hand side. Short enough for the big hitter to drive the green, but if wayward plenty of places in which to loose the ball.
But perhaps the two fairways, signature 8th hole is the best. Standing on a slightly elevated tee you are presented with a fairway that crosses a stream then splits into two with a near diamond shaped woodland in the middle. The decision has to be made whether to drive down the narrow left or wider right hand side of the fairway, because in the middle, from the trees, there is no hope of reaching the green in two strokes.
Being very well drained and never using winter tees, mats or greens, this is a course to visit and enjoy at any time of year.
