Powfoot Golf Club - A Review
By Kevin McGimpsey
18 Holes Of Pure Golfing Enjoyment!
I would describe Powfoot Golf Course in Dumfriesshire, South West Scotland,
as being a “fun to play” links course, ideal for visitors with its
generous landing areas from the tee. The set-up encourages you to play good golf
and therefore encouraging you to return. And return you will!
A really nice touch is the welcome that visitors receive when they arrive at the course. One of the
older members acts as a guide to the Club’s facilities
and as a personal starter on the 1st tee. I have never experienced this at any
other course I have played and found it quite unique!
The views of the Solway
Firth are breath taking on this Par 71 course, measuring 6,400 yards from the
back tee.
Founded in 1903, the course is a mixture of links and parkland. There is an abundance of gorse and heather. The greens that had recently been
sanded were slick and true, in fact a real pleasure to put on. On the course
there was a small band of green keeping staff seen working hard all day and who
obviously took great pride in the up-keep of their course. Some holes are
so well lined with gorse that you don't see or hear any other golfers playing
nearby holes.
The opening hole at 350 yards has a bank of yellow gorse running
along the left side of the fairway and open fields on its right. Normally the
prevailing wind is from the left (the Solway Firth) and it eagerly carries poor
drives out of bounds.
The signature hole could well be the 11th . Called ‘Sahara’,
it is a par 4 measuring only 313 yards. With a blind drive over yellow
gorse, the flag can only been seen by climbing the viewing ladder by the tee.
If you manage to hit the fairway you are left with only a short second shot to
a green that steeply slopes towards the player. Other interesting holes are the
9th (the Crater), 338 yards that has such a steeply inclined green it takes
one or two attempts to get the right line, otherwise the ball rolls off the green
into heavy rough.
The 14th to the 18th holes are played over parkland rather
than link and the 18th at 375 yards is a terrific finishing hole requiring a
lengthy but accurate drive and a second shot slightly up hill of 160 yards to
a well guarded green beneath the Club house.
The Clubhouse is under-going extensions
and improvements in 2010 and the new facilities should further enhance the visitor’s
experience.
