Spain's Alcaidesa Golf Resort - #4 of 6 Costa del Sol Golf Course Reviews by Golfer Today's Editor - Roger Morton

The Heathland Course was a joy to play, it has a quite an English feel to it

Spain's Alcaidesa Golf Resort is a delightful 36-hole golf complex just off the A-7, 3km from Valderrama and San Roque. The winding road to the clubhouse gives a fine panoramic view of the Heathland course and surrounding countryside.

The modern low-level clubhouse, reached up a short flight of steps, opens into a fantastic circular entrance hall with an infinity pool at the far end seemingly stretching in to the distant Mediterranean Sea. It is a stunning sight and so unusual.

To the left of the Clubhouse is a two tier, 72 bay driving range, the open top upper level giving a brilliant view of both the course and sea. It was a pleasure to hit balls high into the blue sky before staring the round. To the front of the Clubhouse is a huge practice putting green and good sized, separate chipping green.

The Heathland Course was a joy to play, it has a quite an English feel to it, the fairways are generously wide allowing the golfer to go for their shots and the huge, true greens a slower pace than other courses in the area, encourage good firm puts. The view of the first hole was wide open and seemed rather plain. This was deceptive, the course soon developed into a thoroughly enjoyable, fair test of golf with a fantastic array of interesting holes. This course encourages straightforward hitting. The par 3, 14th hole played from an elevated tee, completely over water to a gentle sloping green deserves the merit as the signature hole.

The Links course is regarded as the slightly tougher of the two courses with a few more bunkers evident. But here again the fairways are temptingly wide and there are so many well-designed holes to play. You will not get bored here! The 4th and 10th holes give the most incredible, breathtaking view of Gibraltar looming out of the sea; it is a most glorious sight to see when you first arrive at the 4th tee. But do not be distracted for too long though as the hole in front is a real test!

If you visit this area of the Costa del Sol you simply must play these two courses you will not be disappointed in any way. They are both a great test of golf and very well maintained. The food and clubhouse service were excellent and both of a high standard. Alcaidesa would prove to be the most wonderful venue for the single player or for a party of golfers looking to play a week’s golf. The green fees are affordable and there are good rates for off-season golf.

So do not miss out – it’s a golf course you will want to return to again and again, play Alcaidesa and have a great time!
