Spain's La Duquesa Golf Club - #5 of 6 Costa del Sol Golf Course Reviews by Golfer Today's Editor - Roger Morton
This is not a flat course, many of La Duquesa Golf Club's holes have sloping
fairways and there are some quite severe dogleg holes with blind tee shots.

The La Duquesa Golf Club golf course is great fun and quite tricky to play
with some of the most breathtaking, spectacular holes you will ever see. Carved
through the beautiful hillside alongside the A-7 in Duquesa at exit Km 143, the
course offers incredible views of the surrounding course, countryside, Mediterranean
Sea and North African coast. This is not a flat course, many holes have sloping
fairways and there are some quite severe dogleg holes with blind tee shots. It
is well watered, very well maintained and is a total joy to play. A golf buggy
is highly recommended; it’s a long walk round!
La Duquesa possesses such an incredible variety of holes that it would be very
difficult to name the signature hole. Some holes are quite open and straightforward.
Others twist and turn. Some have tight driving holes with trees and well-positioned
bunkers. All of the par three holes are different and challenging. Your interest
is kept going for the whole of the round and you never quite know what to expect
around the corner! Many holes will long live in the memory after playing this
delightful course.
There can never be a finer view anywhere on a golf course than when standing
on the tee of the short par 3, 17th hole and surveying the scene below of the
La Duquesa Golf Club Clubhouse, 10th and 18th fairways and sea in the distance.
It is worth the money just to linger a while and take in this most incredible
scene.
Even the first hole when played from the back tee seems frighteningly tight and
you wonder just how you will hit the ball on the fairway. But after a reasonable
drive looking back to the tee the fairway looks very wide and then you wonder
what all the fuss was about. It’s just that the course has been so brilliantly
designed as to reward the golfer who can keep his nerve. There are many times
that you will stand in awe of the shot to be played in front of you. The scenery
is simply superb.
La Duquesa is a friendly place and is extremely popular with people living in
the area. The splendid clubhouse has a shaded terrace for drinks and meals close
to the 18th green and always seemed very busy. In fact there were parties of
lady golfers from England who had come to stay for the week in the attached Hotel
and had found it a fantastic venue and superb value for money. To the right of
the clubhouse is a good size practice area with four covered bays and plenty
of open-air bays plus separate chipping green to the side. To the left of the
terrace is a really good putting green. All of these facilities are adjacent
to the clubhouse so you do not have to venture to far if you only want to go
and practice for awhile.
Unlike a lot of golf courses La Duquesa is very close, a matter of minutes, to
Marina Duquesa a popular resort with lots of restaurants around the small marina
and near by beach and was very busy in the evenings. So all round, this centrally
located golf course offer a truly memorable experience in many ways.
