Roque Golf and Country Club – New Course - The charming low-level clubhouse, quite beautiful inside, has a well-shaded terrace where food and drinks can be taken all day. The club shop was extremely well stocked with a great range of equipment and particularly emblem clothes to remind you of your visit. So now to the extensive well appointed driving range just behind the caddie masters buildings to warm up before venturing out on to the course. There were also chipping and putting areas at the first and tenth tees. San Roque Golf and Country Club has quite a history with professional tournaments. It has held the Spanish Open and more recently has been the venue for the main European Tour final qualifying school for professionals trying to secure their card for the following season. There are two courses here the Old and the New. We were going to play the New Course, which offers great value for money by being about half the green fee cost of the Old Course.
Set in tranquil rolling country side the course is superbly appointed on rather old fashioned lines, that is without too much water, and was a pure delight to play. The cork tree lined fairways were beautifully maintained and the very holding, immaculate greens were extremely quick to putt on. Finding the correct borrow was vitally important in trying to hole putts, as they were so fast. The bunkers had the most wonderful white crystallised sand giving a perfect surface from which to play out of. It was the best sand that I have ever played shots from and it was almost a pleasure to find a bunker! There were many memorable holes on the par 72, New Course at San Roque, but the par three’s were particularly good and challenging. The fourth hole was spectacular. Measuring 217 yards from the back elevated tee, giving wonderful views of the surrounding countryside, over a ravine with plenty of trouble down the left side. With great relief both my partner and I found the generous green from the tee, helped by a slight crosswind from the right. The hole is called “Seve’s Tee” and some 30 yards further back, higher up a slope just to the left of the third green, is a small, stone fronted Tee giving a truly daunting view of the hole where one can imagine Seve at the height of his powers smashing a No 1 iron into the heart of the green! So if visiting Costa del Sol, San Roque Golf and Country Club is a must course to play, not only for the fantastic welcome that you will receive but it is simply a beautiful course to enjoy golf.
