If you are able to practise swing on an area of grass or bare stone less compact ground in the back garden, or even better on wet hard sand on the beach, try this exercise to improve your divot taking.
Draw a thin line on the ground about a foot long. Stand with the line roughly in the middle of your stance pointing away from you, and sit the head a no 5 iron or similar club on the end of the line nearest to you, as you would if lining up behind a ball at the address,.
Now take a full practise golf club swing with the objective of hitting out a divot on the follow through side of the line. Once you have taken out a proper divot move the club along the line a few inches and practise another swing.
You should be able to take out a row of beautiful shaped divots as you move up the line after each swing. If you miss the ground altogether or hit the ground fat behind the line it will show up your inconsistency at impact, and give a visual aid to help improve your swing without having to hit golf balls.
A thoroughly enjoyable golf club swing practice exercise!
