Golf Club Comparison Test
- by Alex Morton -

Srixon 302, 8.5° Driver
with YS6+S Shaft
versus
Nike SasQuatch (SQ), 13° Driver
with a Diamana X flex Shaft

I just love using my Srixon 302, 8.5° Driver with the newly fitted I just love using my Srixon 302, 8.5° Driver with the newly fitted YS6+ S shaftGraphite Design YS6+ S shaft, but just recently I was offered the opportunity to use and compare it to a Nike SasQuatch (SQ), 13° Driver fitted with a Diamana X flex shaft, a real quality graphite product.

Both clubs were tested on the grass practise ground with marked balls, hitting into a head wind.

After warming up by hitting 20 shots with a No6 iron, I was ready for the test to begin

It was noticeable just how much bigger the Nike SasQuatch head was against the Srixon 302. It’s amazing how the latest technology has helped in developing a head so big it seems almost impossible to miss hit the ball with. Both Drivers measured 45” long and had a D3 swing weight.

A Nike SasQuatch (SQ), 13° Driver - Golf ClubThe first 5 shots were hit with the Nike SQ Driver. Amazingly for such a lofted club, bearing in mind the X flex shaft, the ball flight was very penetrating, with just a little turn over to the left, very enjoyable. The shaft felt pleasantly solid and the head gave off a higher pitch impact sound on contact with the ball.

A Diamana X flex shaft, a real quality product - Graphite Golf Shaft

The next 5 shots were with my Srixon. The ball flight was just a little higher but stayed arrow straight. Even though this club has less face loft than the Nike, because the shaft was so easy to hit, it felt livelier, with a little more kick at impact, getting the ball airborne was not a problem. The impact sound was also lower.

The newly fitted Graphite Design - YS6+ S shaft

The test was continued with a further 15 balls with each driver.

My conclusion is that I would not swap the Srixon - YS6 combination for the Nike – Diamana one. The reasons are because I found more accuracy which is most important to lower your handicap, and more length, of between 5 – 10 meters. I also prefer the smaller, compact Srixon head; obviously I have become used to it but if you cannot better something why change?

But isn't this the whole point? Not every one can play with the same type of Driver. It is imperative to find a club that has suitable components fitted for you, to promote confidence by results. In another players hands the Nike – Diamana combination would produce perfect shots.

So don’t be afraid to experiment. If you like your Driver head get some advice and change the shaft to one that more correctly matches your swing speed. Stick to quality products seek out the best you can afford, as they have usually been researched and tested a lot more thoroughly. Test a few shots with a friends Driver against your own to find out if there is any improvement. Technology is improving equipment all the time; make sure that it will benefit your game.
