![]() Standing on the 1st tee - Aphrodite Hills Golf, Cyprus - by Nicola Williams
Standing on the 1st tee on Saturday morning, the hesitant spring sunshine just starting to gain in confidence, the glistening Mediterranean majestic in the distance, I did wonder if it could possibly be true. One of those “time stood still” moments when reality becomes almost a dream. A heavenly interlude on a golf course you could describe as spectacular if you were feeling conservative.
But without doubt, the 18 hole championship golf course is the diamond in this resorts crown. Playing the whole course, you will be required to take a golf cart, and it soon becomes apparent why. There can be a distance as great as 950 meters from green to the next tee, and sharp inclines and descents that have you clinging on for dear life. Images of wacky races are conjured up as you zigzag up and down the ravine, desperately hoping that it hasn’t been long since the brakes were checked.
And it is in the ravine that the devilish 7th hole awaits you, the signature hole of the course. At only 128 meters, you could be forgiven for a little arrogance, but don’t flex your muscles too obviously, between the tee and green is the depth of the ravine merrily calling your name. Interesting at worst, truly awe inspiring at best. But the golf facility at Aphrodite Hills isn’t just limited to this amazing course. There is an elevated, canopied driving range, a smart chipping and putting practice area right in front of the clubhouse terrace, a 3 hole academy course, and an extensively stocked pro-shop to rival the best. And if you fancy turning your hand to tennis, there are tournament standard courts with coaching available. Top quality equipment is available to hire, including golf shoes, which were more comfortable than my own. And so, when the course has finished its onslaught on you, retire to the clubhouse terrace for some well-earned sustenance to realize the horror or joys of your scorecard, and revel in the countless stories and laughs you will have to recount after this awesome experience at this magical place.
