Padraig Harrington 2007 Open Champion
Hard working Irishman Padraig Harrington finally realised his dream of becoming the Champion golfer by winning the 2007 Open at Carnoustie, Scotland in July and giving a great boost for European golf into the bargain by beating Sergio Garcia of Spain over a tense 4 hole play off.
Born in Ballyroan, Dublin, Ireland on 31.8.1971, Padraig seemed destined to become one of the best ever golfers to come out of Ireland by sheer hard work. Even from the age of four he spent hours on the practice ground developing his skills, so determined was he to succeed.
By the age of 15 Padraig Harrington was a scratch player and had a wonderful Amateur career winning many tournaments along the way including the Irish Open and Irish Closed titles in 1995. He also played in three Walker Cup matches against the Americans in 1991, 1993 and the winning team of 1995 at Royal Porthcawl, Wales against an American side that included Tiger Woods. He has represented his Country on 114 occasions around the world in various tournaments.
He turned Professional late in 1995 and quickly established himself amongst the world’s top players. He is now ranked no.6 in the world, the highest placed European. He has won over 20 tournaments world wide and has played in 4 Ryder Cup matches making his first appearance in 1999, three of them on the winning team.
In 2006 he won the coveted Vardon Trophy for winning the European Tour order of merit.
Padraig Harrington's appetite for success is still very strong and he practices very hard to improve his game further, so who knows what is in store for this genial Irishman. He is a lesson for us all, be determined, work hard and maybe you will succeed in your chosen path.
