Re Chroming Old Forged Golf Iron Heads
Over the past 12 months I have experienced a huge increase in the number
of golfers enquiring about getting their old forged iron heads re chromed to
a new finish - says Roger Morton.

All mainstream manufacturers such as Srixon,
Mizuno, Nike and Taylor Made amongst others produce sets of forged irons with
a chrome finish as many golfers prefer the feel of this type of club.
Nearly
all forged iron heads today are made from mild steel with a high polished chrome
or sateen finish. With use, particularly in the short irons, these heads can
become very rusty. As mild steel is soft allowing club heads to be easily altered
for loft and lie, it can also be easily damaged. The result is lots of nicks
and dents to the head quite often with rust spots. Also if hitting a stone under
the turf when playing a shot the chrome can chip away from the leading edge of
the sole causing rust to appear. Unlike with stainless steel this damage cannot
be repaired, the head has to be re chromed.
In the past forged heads were also made from stainless steel making it very easy
to repair damage by re cutting and polishing the head and even finishing with
a shot blast face panel to make the iron head as good as new. But iron heads
are no longer produced in this material as the heads will last a very long time,
which is not good news for golf club companies as they want turnover and to sell
the golfer new products.
So
for those golfers who have chromed iron heads beginning to show wear, what options
do they have? They can trade in their irons for a new set. But rusty or damaged
chromed iron heads are not desired by the golfing public and will therefore be
worth very little. They can simply keep the old set and go and buy new but with
a set of forged irons costing anything between £400 - £600
that is a lot of money to lay out. Or if they really like the irons they have
and it is just the condition that is the problem and not the desire for a new
set, they can get them re chromed.
I have been using a specialist company for quite a long time that are masters
of their profession and commercially re chrome iron heads to the highest quality
factory finish. In fact this company is so good that they chrome parts for Daimler
and Rolls Royce cars.
Each head has to be taken off the shaft and face lines re cut. The heads are
then sanded to remove all marks and scratches and the old chrome layer stripped
off. After chroming the head markings are then painted the shafts re fitted and
the club swing weighted. The whole process takes around 2 weeks and costs £35.00
per club. For a complete set of irons the cost reduces to £30.00 per club.
So comparing the cost to buying a new set, re chroming your favourite iron heads
can save you a lot of money.
