Golfing enthusiast Samuel Ryder, a wealthy seed merchant from St. Albans, England presented the now famous solid gold trophy for the first official Ryder Cup match played between a team of professional golfers representing Great Britain and Ireland against a team from the USA in 1927. European professionals were included into the 12 man GB and Ireland team, now renamed the European team, for the first time in 1979. After years of American domination the last 20 years has seen a reversal in favour of a winning European side in this exciting biennial match play competition.
