The Open Golf Championships

The world’s oldest golf tournament first played in 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club, Ayrshire, had only 8 competitors taking part and the winner was awarded with a Championship Belt.

In 1870 after young Tom Morris had won the Championship for three successive years, the Belt became his property. There after the Claret Jug was awarded to the winner of the tournament, as it still is today.

Since its inauguration the Championship had been decided over 36 holes stroke play but in 1892 was extended to 72 holes with an entry fee imposed on competitors for the first time.

Today thousands of players from all over the world try to qualify to play in the event for which only around 70 make it through to the last 36 holes of the Championship.
