Great Golf Getaways - Golf at
Aldwark Manor Hotel, Near Alne, York - By Rikki White
I can’t imagine why I haven’t played this delightful course at Aldwark Manor Hotel before because it’s almost on my doorstep, but it was a treat waiting to happen and a thoroughly enjoyable one. Not a long course, and quite tight, accuracy is more important than great length on your shots, but most golfers will find it has something of special appeal. A couple of the par 4 holes will tempt the big hitters into having a go for the green, but the same holes are not too difficult pars for the rabbits.
You don’t need to be a mountain goat here as the Vale of York is famously flat and the parkland course, whilst gently undulating and quite stunning with an abundance of magnificent trees, is easy to walk. Recently taken over by Q hotels, Aldwark Manor has embarked on a programme of improving facilities both on and off the course.
The Pro has some innovative ideas on golf instruction. A clinic on golf psychology has been scheduled for 30th July to augment physical expertise with a good mental approach. There are few top professional golfers these days who don’t appreciate the input of a good sports psychologist.
The Brasserie has been awarded 2 rosettes and provides quite delicious gourmet dining, whilst the Terrace, which is open all day and has a large sitting out area, offers the informality which many golfers prefer and some good old-fashioned dishes from a bacon butty to a roast and 2 veg.
The hotel accommodation, whether it be the traditional manor house or the newer contemporary wing, is typical of the high standards of Q hotels. All the rooms are very comfortable, extremely well fitted out (including fast internet access) and easy on the eye.
With the superb sight-seeing and shopping in York and Harrogate, each less than half an hour away from Aldwark Manor Hotel, and the spa facilities for easing the aching joints afterwards, it won’t be difficult to persuade non-golfing partners that a golf break at Aldwark Manor would be a great idea, and for couples the “Sunday driver” provides exceptional value and is deservedly popular.
