FOREST PINES HOTEL, GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB
I have a fondness for “mix and match” courses. Three nines played in different combinations seem to give a lot more for your money. I’ve played the 27 holes of Forest Pines on many occasions and relish the variety. There is at least one grouping to suit every ability of golfer, but you’ll want to try them all.
This is not a country house conversion. It is a delightful, purpose built hotel with more than a touch of luxury , and the superb championship golf course opened in 1996 with the designer, John Morgan, having the advantage of modern techniques in golf course construction. Because this most attractive course was driven through mature woodland, it gives the impression of being long established, but with up-to-date design features. The complex has already earned, and deserves, a fine reputation in the golfing world.
Such is the quality of its construction that Forest Pines golf course boasts an enviable record of being closed because of adverse conditions for less than a week in its entire history. When booking golf breaks in advance – you can be pretty certain that rain won’t stop play.
The hotel, which keeps growing, also has the benefit of modern construction. All the rooms are a good size, very comfortable, and come with all mod cons including internet access throughout the hotel. If you’re looking beyond golf, the new £11 million Events Centre provides the icing on the cake. Weddings, conferences, car launches, sportsmen’s dinners, awards ceremonies – you name it and Forest Pines can cater for it.
When it comes to the inner man, if you have a penchant for French cooking to supplement the English dishes, you’ll enjoy the Beech Tree restaurant (under refurbishment during my visit, but tried and tested often in the past and highly recommended). The Garden Room is a splendid alternative and yet another option for more casual fare is The Pines, the newest addition to the eateries, which has a large balcony overlooking the course for al fresco meals and is “open all hours”
And if that’s not enough to tempt you, the health club and spa lack nothing in their state-of-the-art facilities, so after you’ve cracked the golf course, and before you look forward to your evening meal, you can indulge yourself with one or more of the activities or treatments on offer.
If you’re looking for a golf break that offers pretty well everything on your wish list, you need look no further than Forest Pines.
