Great Golf Getaways Golf at Headlam Hall Hotel, Gainford, Darlington, County Durham DL2 3HA - by Rikki White
I’m an all-weather golfer. Unless the winds are gale force and the rain horizontal, I need my regular “fix” so golf breaks are year-round events for me.
However, I do like my creature comforts and that’s what is rather special about Headlam Hall. In these days when most golf hotels are very well equipped and come with splendid spa facilities, as indeed does Headlam Hall, many of the larger chains of hotels are rather impersonal, but there is an “olde worlde” charm and cosiness about Headlam Hall that makes it just as inviting in winter or summer. In a word it has "atmosphere”
I always make a better fist of a round of golf the second time I play a course, so the 9 hole course at Headlam Hall suits me well, especially 9 in the morning, a lazy lunch, then 9 in the afternoon. The first two holes are deceptively simple, but you begin to smell a rat on the short 3rd, with a ditch meandering along the line to the green and a large tree overhanging it, but the course really starts to show its teeth on the long 4th hole. A couple of very long par 3s then lead you to the 7th hole which owes much to the 17th at Sawgrass, so this course is not a piece of cake but a very satisfying challenge.
So what else is on offer? The restaurant is rather intimate and the food excellent, but the brasserie caters for those wanting an informal meal. The accommodation is comfortable and there are suites available which are simply luxurious. The spa is exceptionally well equipped with a wide range of treatments. There is a fine driving range and expert golf tuition from the Club Professional, Steve Carpenter, and to top it all there is a huge, stunning, walled-garden that is a touch of old England lovingly maintained. Last but not least, the service in this family owned hotel is superb and makes all the guests feel rather special.
Of course, in these days of global warming, we can have wonderful weather at almost any time of the year – I have played on Christmas Day 9 times out of the last 10 years - and with good weather forecasts on the internet these days, a quick e-mail or phone call and you can be fixed up at short notice with a golf break at the exceptionally attractive winter rates. At Headlam Hall it’s £83 per night for dinner, bed and breakfast (sharing double or twin room), unlimited golf and great value.
Headlam Hall Hotel - Headlam Hall Hotel is a Country House Hotel, Spa, Restaurant and Golf Course located in County Durham, North East England, midway between Darlington and Teesdale. Standing in beautiful walled gardens with its own luxury spa and golf course, this seventeenth century Jocobean mansion looks out over its own rolling countryside estate.
This superb 9 hole course is set over mature rolling pastureland to the east of the Hall and has an abundance of natural features including rig & fur, woodland, streams and ponds which are both pleasing to the eye and challenging to the player.
