This, my first visit to Linden Hall Golf and Country Club, was on the recommendation of golfing friends, and it certainly lived up to my expectations. My first priority is always the quality of the course and I really enjoyed this very challenging experience.
Undulating, but not hilly, the parkland course meanders through the beautiful Northumberland countryside. With an abundance of mature woodland, there are some spectacular holes, particularly the newly redesigned 7th, which will test even the best players. However, the course has much to offer the high handicapper as well, with some good short par 3s. Throw in plenty of water features and unexpected hazards and beating the course will be as important as beating your playing partners.
The 19th is also a bit special at Linden Hall because it’s a real pub, The Linden Tree, with all the atmosphere you could wish for, ideal to have a couple of drinks together with some good home cooking whilst you dissect your game hole by hole. If you have ladies in your group, they can slide away and leave you to it whilst they indulge in a little pampering in the well equipped health and fitness spa, although I know a few men who are not averse to hot stone therapy, which will work wonders on any aches and pains engendered if you choose to walk the 18 holes. It’s a long course with a fair distance between some of the greens and tees, but buggies are available for the less sprightly.
Linden Hall itself was converted into a hotel in 1980 but has retained all the original elegance and atmosphere of a country house. It has 4 stars with a quality rating of 82%, which is in the top 10% of 4 stars in the country. The bedrooms come in varying sizes, but are all very well equipped.
Dining in the elegant Dobson restaurant, which is 2 Rosette standard and well deserving of it, is smart casual with plenty of good English cuisine in an interesting menu, that will appeal however sophisticated your taste buds, or you can go back to the pub and chill out with a really relaxed meal.
I’m sure you won’t be disappointed if you choose a break at Linden Hall Golf and Country Club, Morpeth, Northumbria. The awesome 13th hole will bring me back just to have another go at this monster hole – after you have negotiated two dog legs, you have to carry a lake to a green surrounded on 3 sides by water!! A bogey here could be looked upon as a triumph.
