If your idea of a golf break is to get away from the British winter to warmer climes, then this article is probably not for you. If you enjoy airport lounges, luggage carousels, several hours travelling in cramped conditions, and 5 hour rounds of golf, then this article is certainly not for you. However, if you just like to throw your things into the back of your car and drive to superb golf courses, where everyone speaks English and all the players know and follow the etiquette of golf, then read on.
High on the list of desirable venues has got to be Matfen Hall. The most demanding guest would be hard pressed to find something the hotel management haven’t thought of and catered for at this delightful hotel.
The 6615 yard 18 hole parkland course is not for the faint hearted. There are challenges galore, not least the lake, the fast flowing river and the ha-ha wall. A further 9 holes have been constructed to extend the main course and these will open in June 2007. The 9 hole par 3 course is no pushover with some demanding shots required. Ideal for those for whom 18 holes is not enough or a bit too much, and great for sharpening up the short game and when you’ve worked up an appetite on the course, the Keeper’s Lodge, is especially welcoming with a tempting menu served all day.
The teaching facilities are splendid with state of the art technology I had a lesson with the Professional, John Harrison, a talented instructor, who managed to teach me how to hit the ball further. He did indeed prove that you can teach an old dog new tricks.
The Health & Fitness centre has it all and the range of spa treatments is extensive. I’ve suffered with back pain for years but hot stone therapy and massage produced blissful relief and a good night’s sleep.
Dining is in the elegant Print Room and Library restaurant. The menu is unusual and i maginative but not without an element of good English cuisine. And nothing has been left out in equipping the charming, comfortable bedrooms, including internet access if you need to keep your finger on the pulse.
I cannot imagine a more appealing place to take a golf break than Matfen Hall. Map - Website
