Multi award winning hotel, Matfen Hall near Newcastle upon TyneEarly in June 2007, multi award winning hotel, Matfen Hall near Newcastle upon Tyne opened the first new golf course in the north east of England this century - the 9 hole Dewlaw Golf Course.

The image from left to right is as follows: Steve McClaren; Jonathon Edwards; Ken Ferrie and Sir Hugh Blackett (Owner of Matfen Hall) When the Dewlaw 9 hole course is added to the existing 18 hole Matfen Golf Course, the result is a rigorous and challenging 27 hole golfing complex. This millennium golf course was opened by celebrity golfer Sir Hugh Blackett and Matfen’s Touring Professional Ken Ferrie, Jonathon Edwards and Steve McClaren. Measuring just over 3400 yards, Dewlaw features some notable holes of scale. At one end of the spectrum put in a par 5 measuring almost 600 yards from the championship tee, and at the other end of the scale a par 3 measuring just over 170 yards. The sting in the tail of this one is that most of the carry is over water & marshland.

Our reporter, Rikki White with John HarrisonThe Dewlaw course has been designed jointly by Director of Coaching at Matfen Hall, John Harrison and Craig Parkinson, Director of Golf. They started with a virtual blank canvas, and utilised additional mature parkland surrounding the hotel and existing course.

On returning from playing the Dewlaw Golf Course for the first time Ken Ferrie, Matfen’s Touring professional said: “This is an interesting and extremely well designed course. It compliments very well the existing 18 holes, and I particularly like how the natural features are integrated into the design, giving it an instantly mature feel and appearance.“

Matfen Hall Hotel - Bridal SuiteMatfen Hall Hotel, with its 53 bedrooms, is recognised as having some of the finest golf, business, spa and leisure facilities in the north east of England. This is a golfing ‘destination hotel’ suitable for all levels of player as the facilities include the Matfen golf academy, 18 hole Matfen Hall Course, a 9 hole par 3 course, with fully covered practice and dedicated teaching bays. Short game practice and grass hitting areas and a handful of PGA qualified professionals are also available. The new 9 holes provides a further experience for golfers, a 27 hole golfing complex.

Sir Hugh Blackett - Owner of Matfen Hall and Celebrity GolferThe 4 star Matfen Hall is located in the Tyne valley, Northumberland and is only a short 20 minutes drive from Newcastle International Airport. Other facilities include dedicated conference and meeting rooms for up to 120 delegates, 15 metre swimming pool, spa with 6 treatment rooms, a range of outdoor pursuits and teambuilding.
