 Shaw Hill Hotel, Golf & Country Club
I first took a golf break at Shaw Hill Hotel, Golf and Country Club, Whittle-Le-Woods, Near Chorley, Lancashire shortly after moving to Yorkshire and enjoyed it so much that I went three times in my first year.
 Shaw Hill has a golf course par excellence: exceptionally attractive parkland with mature woodland and in superb condition. Nothing is predictable here. Every hole is unique and provides some sort of challenge, with lakes and ditches in abundance. Not a particularly long course, don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a doddle if you hit a long ball.. Finesse is also needed to master this masterpiece in golf design. The tortoise and the hare spring to mind when addressing some of the holes.
 The hotel is a charming Georgian country house conversion. Small enough to have an intimate atmosphere (30 bedrooms), with an air of elegance in the lounges and Vardons restaurant , but a nice pub atmosphere in Shaw’s bar, with the sort of menu that appeals after your triumphs and tribulations on the course.
 Vardon's restaurant particularly appeals to me with an early doors sitting – I hate eating late, and it’s nice to have the option of dining early. It’s also one of the most attractive restaurants I have come across with outstanding food and excellent service. In fact, the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff throughout the establishment was second to none.
 The bedrooms, all recently refurbished, are extremely comfortable and tastefully decorated. Each has internet access.
Of course, there is a pool, sauna and gymnasium (it seems almost mandatory these days) with a Health & Beauty suite so that non-golfing ladies don’t feel left out.
 Although the hotel caters for all types of golfing parties, I would recommend it especially for couples or small mixed groups. There’s something about the atmosphere that’s really friendly. My husband and I paired up with a young couple we met in Shaw’s Bar and had a most enjoyable game.
