Pictures on the Staverton Park website, showing golfers searching in the
deep rough, brought a degree of apprehension about my return to this delightful
venue, as I’m not as accurate as I used to be. However, nothing ventured
nothing gained and in fact I need not have concerned myself. Accuracy is important
for the big hitters, but the fairways are generous. For the shorter hitters,
like me, however, hanging lies can be a problem on the undulating fairways. My
best drives invariably ended up halfway down a slope. But there was a plus side
to this – I really learned to tackle the problem and hope it will be of
benefit on my home course.
 The
Staverton Park Golf Course is exceptionally attractive – all that is most
beautiful about England is here. Rolling countryside, an assortment of mature
trees and enough water to give you a challenge, but not enough to deter you.
Commander-in-Chief of the smooth running of golf play is Jenny, the lady starter
and ex-Lady Captain, who knows how to run a busy programme and will stand no
nonsense. A strict dress code is in force, no violation is ever allowed, and
all this achieved with good nature, enthusiasm and charm.
 The
hotel restaurant is delightfully informal, as is the Staverton Suite at the golf
club, which serves snacks all day long. I’m a bit fussy, but
I was never disappointed with the quality, or indeed the quantity of the food.
It is highly recommended. At weekends they run a halfway house, and food can
be pre-ordered en route to the 10th tee, and so will be ready for you when you
arrive, in order to avoid delays.
 The
extensive new accommodation is light, spacious and minimalist in style without
losing any comfort. Each room has a sitting area with 2 easy chairs, where you
can chill out after golf without having to use the public rooms – a
real bonus to me. There’s internet access in all the rooms, although there
is also a cyber café for those who forgot to pack their laptops.
 The
pool and spa amenities are welcome after a hard day on the golf course or indeed
after a hard day in one of the vast number of conference and training rooms – the
facilities are boundless.
This is a jolly hotel and the staff couldn’t be more helpful. Great
for groups, but still enjoyable for a two-some, so why not take a break at Staverton
Park and see for yourself.
