![]() Tiger Woods - USA Golfer
Throughout the last 150 years since the conception of tournament golf starting with the first Open at Prestwick in 1860, each generation has produced its “Master Golfer”. Tiger Woods' finishing position in all four Majors each year since 1997 is just phenomenal. If not actually winning the tournament he has nearly always been in a position to win on the last day. A quite remarkable achievement considering the amount of competition from other very good battle hardened tournament players around. Tiger just seems to blow them away in the pressure cooker tension of the last round of a Major. His intensity to win is just amazing. The tougher the conditions the more he seems to raise his game above all others. But is he the best of all time? Certainly modern equipment has allowed his erratic driving to be compensated by the prodigious distance the ball flies so that his recovery shot is more likely to be played with a lofted club and therefore easier to be extracted from trouble. Would he have been so successful with the smaller head and more difficult to hit persimmon driver and inferior golf ball of twenty years ago when accuracy was much more of a premium than length? We will never know unless he gives all the other players a head start by using them in his next Major attempt!
