Great Golf Getaways
Vale Hotel Golf and Spa Resort,
Hensol, Vale Of Glamorgan by Rikki White

What
first intrigued me about the Vale Resort were the remarkable achievements of
all six of the Golf Club’s teams, every one winning their respective
leagues. I found it hard to believe that the Vale Resort’s GC only attracts
players of great talent, so assumed it had something to do with the coaching.
Perhaps I could pick up a few tips and indeed I did. The Big White Chief of Golf
Operations, Clive Coombs, invited me to watch a junior coaching session where
I learned quite a few things that helped my game.
The “Academy” boasts coaching facilities second to none, Clive
Coombs runs a team of 5 dedicated teaching professionals, including David Llewellyn,
a former Wales National Coach, and the enthusiasm filters down through the system.
I’ve never seen so many youngsters trying so hard to get it right.
There
are two courses at Vale, the Wales National at a massive 7433 yards and the
Lake Course at a less intimidating 6436 yards, but needing just as much skill
and judgment, with lots of water and an island green reminiscent of the 17th
at Sawgrass.
This luxury 4 Star hotel stands in 650 acres of parkland which once formed
part of the Hensol estate. Hensol Castle has now been purchased by Vale Resort
and is being developed into a 5 star hotel and residential spa. There are no
bounds to the ambitious plans of the hands-on owners of Vale Resort.
Other
sports have not been neglected at Vale Hotel and Spa, Hensol – they have
a vast indoor sports venue, home to the Wales rugby and football teams, as well
as outdoor pitches used by Cardiff City Football Club and Cardiff Blues Rugby
Club.
Accommodation
is spacious and fully outfitted, with many of the rooms having balconies, and
the eating arrangements are generally smart casual. La Cucina provides Mediterranean
fare and The Vale Grill restaurant specializes in “the
best of British” food, but I also enjoyed the comfort of The Vale Bar for
all day snacks.
There are 19 luxurious Spa treatment rooms for toning up and relaxing after
your game, and I really find it very hard to think of anything they have forgotten
when catering for their guests and their pastimes.
I plan to go back there again soon, and I recommend it to any other golf aficionados.
